Beak
Also known as: — | Race: Human (Malazan) | Warren/Affiliation: All warrens (unique ability)Summary
Beak is a Malazan mage seconded to Captain Faradan Sort in the Bonehunters. He possesses a unique and extraordinary gift: the ability to see and access every warren simultaneously, perceiving them as colored candles or flames. Despite this unparalleled magical talent, Beak is a gentle, childlike soul — psychologically damaged by a traumatic childhood in which his brother was killed and he suffered terrible abuse. His sacrifice during the invasion of Letheras, in which he opens every warren at once to protect the Bonehunters, is one of the most emotionally devastating moments in the entire series.
Arc by Book
Book 7: Reaper's Gale
Beak serves under Captain Faradan Sort during the Bonehunters' invasion of the Letherii Empire. He is quiet, eager to please, and seemingly simple — but his magical perception is beyond anything the other mages have encountered. When the Bonehunters are trapped and facing annihilation, Beak lights all his "candles" at once, creating a protective field of pure magic that saves the entire company but burns him away completely. His death is mourned by the entire army, and Faradan Sort's grief for the young mage she was meant to protect is shattering.
