Brys Beddict
Also known as: King's Champion, Finadd | Race: Human (Letherii) | Warren/Affiliation: Kingdom of LetherSummary
Brys Beddict is the youngest of the three Beddict brothers and the finest swordsman in the Letherii Empire — the King's Champion. Honourable, disciplined, and deeply loyal to the throne, Brys stands in contrast to his brothers: the eccentric genius Tehol and the disgraced scholar Hull. His death during the Tiste Edur conquest of Lether is a tragedy of poisoned duty — not, as many assume, a defeat in combat: Brys actually cuts Rhulad down in their duel, and only the cursed sword and a poisoned goblet from First Eunuch Nifadas rob him of the win. His subsequent resurrection by the Elder God Mael at the end of Reaper's Gale gives him a second life in service to a transformed kingdom. Under Emperor (later King) Tehol, Brys becomes the military commander tasked with leading Letherii forces alongside the Malazan Bonehunters in the final campaign.
Arc by Book
Book 5: Midnight Tides
Brys serves as Finadd and King's Champion of Lether under King Ezgara Diskanar. He is the kingdom's greatest duellist, undefeated in combat. As the Tiste Edur invade under the Warlock King Rhulad Sengar, Brys is tasked with defending the throne. In the throne-room duel, Brys actually does defeat Rhulad — methodically crippling him: severing his tendons, disembowelling him, and leaving him helpless on the floor, sword raised over the broken emperor before lowering it. Only the cursed sword's curse of resurrection robs Brys of his victory. Brys then dies of poison — the goblet had been delivered by First Eunuch Nifadas at the orchestration of the Errant — not because Rhulad beat him. His body is preserved by Bugg (Mael) in the waters beneath the palace.
Book 7: Reaper's Gale
Mael pulls Brys back from the drowned dead at Tehol's request. He returns to life changed — touched by the Elder God's essence, eyes now mismatched — in time for the collapse of the Letherii Empire. By the end of Reaper's Gale he is in Letheras with Tehol (who has been proclaimed Emperor), alive and bantering with his brother. Brys resumes command of the Letherii military forces in the transformed kingdom.
Book 9: Dust of Dreams
Brys leads the Letherii army eastward in alliance with the Bonehunters, crossing into the Wastelands under Tehol's rule. He must reconcile his martial discipline with the alien campaign Tavore is drawing them into.
Book 10: The Crippled God
Brys commands the Letherii forces in the final campaign, fighting alongside the Bonehunters and allied armies. His tactical brilliance and personal combat skills remain vital as the allied forces converge on Kolanse.
