Characters

Hedge

Also known as: — | Race: Human (Malazan) | Warren/Affiliation: Bridgeburners (deceased), Ghost

Summary

Hedge is a Bridgeburner sapper and the partner-in-demolitions of Fiddler. Killed at the Siege of Coral in Memories of Ice, Hedge refuses to stay dead — his ghost persists with the same irrepressible energy and love of explosives that defined him in life. His spectral existence across multiple books makes him one of the series' most enduring and beloved characters. The eventual reunion between Hedge and Fiddler is one of the great payoffs of the ten-book arc.

Arc by Book

Book 1: Gardens of the Moon

Hedge is a sapper in the 9th Squad of the Bridgeburners under Whiskeyjack, working alongside Fiddler. He is part of the unit during the Siege of Pale and the mission to Darujhistan, though he is not one of the squad members infiltrating the city.

Book 3: Memories of Ice

Hedge campaigns with the Bridgeburners through the Pannion War. He fights alongside Fiddler's (now Strings') cussers and sharpers through the Siege of Capustan's approach and the march to Coral. At the Siege of Coral he dies detonating a cusser against a target he could not have survived — "the bastard blew himself up with a cusser." His death is one of the emotional hinges of the Pannion War.

Book 7: Reaper's Gale

Hedge exists as a ghost among the shades of the Bridgeburner dead, operating in the world between life and death. He retains his sapper's instincts and his unshakeable loyalty to the Bridgeburners. His ghostly adventures carry both humour and pathos as he works to affect events in the living world.

Book 10: The Crippled God

Hedge is restored to life and reunites with Fiddler in one of the series' most emotionally satisfying moments. He fights in the final battle as a living sapper once more.
