Kettle
Also known as: — | Race: Human (undead child) | Warren/Affiliation: Azath HouseSummary
Kettle is a dead child who serves as the guardian of the Azath House in the city of Letheras. Animated by the Azath's failing energies, Kettle watches over the ancient structure as its power wanes and its prisoners stir. She is one of the series' most poignant figures — a murdered child whose afterlife is spent protecting the world from what lies imprisoned beneath the Azath grounds.
Arc by Book
Book 5: Midnight Tides
Kettle haunts the grounds of the Azath House in Letheras, a small, dead girl who speaks with an unsettling awareness beyond her apparent age. She befriends Shurq Elalle (a fellow undead being) and Ublala Pung, forming connections despite her inhuman state.
As the Azath House weakens, Kettle becomes aware that its prisoners — ancient, powerful beings trapped beneath the barrows — are stirring. One of these prisoners is Silchas Ruin, the Tiste Andii Soletaken, whose eventual release reshapes the political landscape of Lether.
Kettle plays a role in determining which prisoners are released and which remain contained, her connection to the Azath giving her influence over the structure's failing power. She also nurtures the growth of a new Azath House — a seed of the old one that may eventually replace it.
By the end of Midnight Tides, Kettle has helped channel the Azath's remaining power, contributing to the cosmic realignment that accompanies the Edur invasion.
