Yedan Derryg

Also known as: The Watch | Race: Human (Shake bloodline, half-Tiste Andii) | Warren/Affiliation: The Shore, Kingdom of the Shake

Summary

Yedan Derryg, known as the Watch, is Yan Tovis's half-brother and the military champion of the Shake. Quiet, relentless, and terrifyingly skilled with a sword, Yedan embodies duty stripped of all pretension. His defining act is his stand at the Shore — the boundary between the realms of Light and Dark — where he single-handedly holds back wave after wave of Tiste Liosan invaders. It is one of the most extraordinary feats of combat in the entire series, a prolonged, grinding defence that elevates a mortal warrior to legendary status.

Arc by Book

Book 7: Reaper's Gale

Yedan Derryg appears as a taciturn, capable soldier accompanying Yan Tovis. His Shake heritage and the title "the Watch" hint at deeper significance. He demonstrates formidable combat abilities and an unshakeable commitment to his half-sister's safety.

Book 9: Dust of Dreams

As Yan Tovis accepts the throne of the Shake, Yedan steps fully into his ancestral role as the Watch — the warrior who guards the Shore. He accompanies the Shake on their exodus through Kurald Galain, providing military protection during the harrowing journey through absolute darkness. His manner is grim and purposeful; he knows what awaits them at the Shore.

Book 10: The Crippled God

Yedan Derryg makes his stand at the Shore, defending the breach between Light and Dark against the Tiste Liosan. Armed with an Hust sword that sings with ancient power, he fights alone or with dwindling allies against seemingly endless waves of Liosan warriors. His defence is relentless, mechanical, almost inhuman in its endurance — he fights until his body simply cannot fight any longer. His death at the Shore is the sacrifice that holds the boundary, preventing the Liosan from flooding into Darkness and unravelling the world's balance.
