Bult

Summary

Bult is a veteran Wickan commander and uncle to Coltaine, serving as a trusted subordinate during the Chain of Dogs. An old, scarred warrior who has survived decades of both Wickan tribal warfare and service in the Malazan military, Bult brings a sardonic, laconic wit to even the most desperate situations. He provides much of the grim humor in Deadhouse Gates through his deadpan observations as the army fights its way across Seven Cities.

Bult serves as Coltaine's second-in-command and uncle — one of the few people who can speak freely to the Wickan Fist. His role during the Chain of Dogs is that of a veteran enforcer: he relays orders, manages the Wickan cavalry, and provides a steady presence amid chaos.

Bult's relationship with Duiker, the Imperial Historian, provides some of the book's most memorable moments — the old warrior's terse commentary on the horrors around them encapsulates the Wickan stoic approach to warfare. His observations are dark but never despairing, reflecting a people who have always lived close to death.

Bult dies during the final stages of the Chain of Dogs, falling in the fighting that precedes Coltaine's last stand. His death is one of many that mark the progressive destruction of Coltaine's command structure.
