Duiker

Also known as: The Imperial Historian | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: Malazan Empire (Imperial Historian)

Summary

Duiker is the Imperial Historian of the Malazan Empire, a scholar-soldier whose role as witness and recorder of Coltaine's Chain of Dogs gives Deadhouse Gates much of its devastating emotional power. An older man who has seen enough of war to understand its true costs, Duiker serves as both participant and chronicler — fighting alongside the soldiers while documenting their ordeal for posterity.

Duiker represents the theme of witness that runs throughout the Malazan series. He understands that someone must record what happens, not merely the grand strategic narrative but the individual acts of courage, suffering, and sacrifice that make up the reality of war. His growing horror at the Chain of Dogs — and his deepening respect for Coltaine — drives the emotional core of Deadhouse Gates.

His survival of the Fall of Coltaine, his enslavement, and his eventual rescue are part of a broader statement about the responsibility of those who witness to carry that testimony forward. Duiker's account of the Chain of Dogs becomes a defining text within the Malazan world, ensuring that Coltaine's sacrifice is not forgotten.

Arc by Book

Book 2: Deadhouse Gates

Duiker joins Coltaine's march as the Imperial Historian, initially intending merely to observe and record. He quickly becomes a participant, fighting alongside the soldiers and refugees as the Chain of Dogs struggles across Seven Cities. He witnesses the full horror of the march — the battles, the losses, the impossible decisions Coltaine must make. He forms a bond of deep respect with Coltaine and the Wickan warriors. After Coltaine's column is annihilated within sight of the walls of Aren, Duiker is captured and crucified on the last tree of Aren Way alongside ten thousand Malazan soldiers. The chapter closes on his awareness fading into darkness; as far as the book is willing to say, he dies there.

Book 4: House of Chains

Duiker does not appear. He is spoken of across the empire as one of the betrayed and slaughtered — his name grouped with Tattersail, Bellurdan, Nightchill and the other fallen — and his body is never recovered from the road of trees at Aren.

Book 6: The Bonehunters

Duiker still does not appear on-page, but he is no longer silent. The chapter epigraphs begin to attribute new work — "The Lost History of the Bonehunters" by Duiker of Darujhistan — revealing, obliquely, that the historian has in fact survived his crucifixion and is living quietly in Darujhistan, writing again. The Empire itself continues to denounce him as "the traitorous Imperial Historian" whose "betrayal" of Laseen is part of the Wickan pogrom propaganda, while in the ranks of the Bonehunters, Temul rides Duiker's horse and carries scrolls of his writings — a relic of what is officially remembered as a dead man. Tavore, pointedly, advises Mallick Rel to "peruse the works of Duiker" when she confronts him about the pogrom.

Book 8: Toll the Hounds

Duiker is alive, in Darujhistan, quietly attached to K'rul's Bar with the surviving Bridgeburner veterans (Picker, Blend, Antsy, Mallet). He is past history now — in one of the book's quietest, bleakest scenes he burns most of a year's work in the hearth, the papyrus rising as black crows up the chimney, and tells Mallet he is "not interested in thinking any more. About anything." When the Guild of Assassins comes for K'rul's Bar, Duiker is there with them. In the morning he is due at the High Alchemist Baruk's for lunch.
