Udinaas
Also known as: — | Race: Letherii | Warren/Affiliation: Former slave to the Tiste EdurSummary
Udinaas is a Letherii slave who served the Sengar household of the Tiste Edur and became one of the most unlikely yet compelling point-of-view characters in the series. Sharp-tongued, bitter, and possessing a sardonic intelligence that refuses to be crushed by his bondage, Udinaas sees through the pretensions of both Letherii and Edur civilizations with devastating clarity. His bond with Rhulad Sengar — the mad emperor who relies on a slave's honesty when all others offer only flattery — is one of the series' most complex relationships.
Arc by Book
Book 5: Midnight Tides
Udinaas serves as a household slave to the Sengar family. When Rhulad is transformed by the cursed sword of the Crippled God, Udinaas becomes one of the few people the increasingly unstable emperor trusts. His perspective reveals the human cost of the Edur-Letherii conflict from the lowest rung of society.
Book 7: Reaper's Gale
Having escaped slavery, Udinaas travels with Seren Pedac, Fear Sengar, Silchas Ruin, and Kettle. His refusal to show deference to Silchas Ruin — an Ascendant of terrifying power — demonstrates the unbreakable core of self-respect that slavery could not destroy. He becomes a father figure to Kettle and ultimately reaches the Refugium, where he finds a measure of peace.
