Kulp

Also known as: — | Race: Human | Warren/Affiliation: Meanas (Path of Shadow and Illusion)

Summary

Kulp is a cadre mage attached to the Malazan 7th Army in Seven Cities, a practitioner of the warren of Meanas. He plays a significant role in Deadhouse Gates as a reluctant hero drawn into the chaos of the Whirlwind Rebellion. Originally tasked with helping Heboric escape from the Otataral mining camp, Kulp becomes entangled in a nightmarish journey through a magical storm and the treacherous Path of Hands — the convergence of Soletaken and D'ivers seeking to claim the Throne of Shadow.

Kulp represents the common, competent mage thrust into circumstances far beyond his abilities — a man of moderate power facing ascendant-level threats with nothing but skill, courage, and growing desperation.

Arc by Book

Book 2: Deadhouse Gates

Kulp is introduced as a cadre mage of the 7th Army who is recruited by the historian Duiker to aid in the extraction of Heboric from the Otataral mining camp at Skullcup. Kulp agrees reluctantly, understanding the political dangers of the mission.

His mission goes catastrophically wrong when the Whirlwind Rebellion erupts across Seven Cities. Instead of a simple extraction, Kulp finds himself caught in a magical storm that hurls his boat and companions — including Gesler, Stormy, and Truth — into a warren where reality breaks down. They traverse a landscape of horrors, encountering the remnants of ancient civilizations and the dangerous convergence of shapeshifters on the Path of Hands.

During this journey, Kulp's skill with Meanas is tested to its absolute limits. He must contend with D'ivers and Soletaken who are far more powerful than he is, navigating through warren-space while keeping his companions alive.

Kulp never rejoins Coltaine's army. After the warren passage he is travelling overland with Felisin, Heboric and Baudin when their party encounters the disguised merchant Nawahl — in fact the D'ivers Gryllen, an ancient soletaken rat-swarm. Nawahl's flesh dissolves into hundreds of rats that consume him in seconds. Kulp swings his lanterns, shattering them over himself, and is engulfed along with the swarm in a pillar of fire. He dies there, far from the Chain of Dogs, saving his companions by burning himself alive with the D'ivers. Duiker will later learn only that "Kulp plucked Heboric from the island, just like you wanted. Him and two others. The bad news is we lost them in a squall."
