Gesler

Also known as: — | Race: Human (fire-transformed) | Warren/Affiliation: Telas (incidental), Malazan 14th Army (Bonehunters), Mortal Sword of the K'Chain Che'Malle

Summary

Gesler is a Malazan sergeant whose passage through the warren of Telas alongside Stormy and Truth transformed him physically — granting him golden skin, enhanced vitality, and near-ascendant power. A career soldier with a sardonic wit and deep loyalty, Gesler is one of the Bonehunters' most dependable veterans. His ultimate arc carries him far beyond the Malazan military: he is chosen as Mortal Sword of the K'Chain Che'Malle, leading the ancient reptilian race into the final battle against the Forkrul Assail at Kolanse. His death at the Spire alongside Stormy is among the series' most devastating sacrifices.

Arc by Book

Book 2: Deadhouse Gates

Gesler serves as a coastal guard sergeant in Seven Cities. When the Whirlwind uprising erupts, he, Stormy, and Truth are swept into the warren of Telas aboard a burning ship. They emerge transformed — skin turned gold, bodies hardened by fire. They eventually link up with the Chain of Dogs refugees and fight their way to Aren.

Book 6: The Bonehunters

Now part of the Bonehunters under Adjunct Tavore, Gesler commands a squad through Y'Ghatan and the harrowing escape through tunnels beneath the burning city. His fire-hardened nature serves him well. He remains a steady presence through the army's ordeals.

Book 7: Reaper's Gale

Gesler accompanies the Bonehunters during their invasion of Lether. His squad fights through the campaign as the 14th Army dismantles the Letherii-Edur empire.

Book 9: Dust of Dreams

Gesler is chosen as Mortal Sword by the K'Chain Che'Malle Matron Gunth Mach, an astonishing development that elevates a common sergeant to a role of cosmic significance. He accepts the mantle with characteristic pragmatism, forging a bond with the Ve'Gath and K'ell Hunters.

Book 10: The Crippled God

Gesler leads the K'Chain Che'Malle army at the Battle of Kolanse. He and Stormy command the charge against the Forkrul Assail at the Spire. Both die in the assault — a deliberate, knowing sacrifice to buy time for the liberation of the Crippled God. Their deaths are mourned deeply by Fiddler and the surviving Bonehunters.
