Stormy

Summary

Stormy is a Malazan corporal and Gesler's inseparable companion — gruff, belligerent, massively built, and ferociously loyal. Transformed alongside Gesler by passage through the fire-warren of Telas, he bears the same golden skin and near-ascendant resilience. Stormy is loud where Gesler is sardonic, combative where Gesler is steady, but their bond is absolute. He is chosen as Shield Anvil of the K'Chain Che'Malle, accepting the burden of carrying an entire race's grief. His death with Gesler at the Spire during the Battle of Kolanse is one of the series' most devastating moments.

Book 2: Deadhouse Gates

Stormy serves under Gesler in the coastal guard during the Whirlwind uprising. He is swept into the warren of Telas along with Gesler and Truth, emerging transformed with golden skin and enhanced physical prowess. Stormy's stubbornness and fighting ability help the group survive the chaos of Seven Cities and reach Aren.

Book 6: The Bonehunters

Now a corporal in the Bonehunters, Stormy fights at Y'Ghatan and survives the tunnel escape beneath the burning city. His brawling nature and fearlessness make him a natural combat leader. He bickers constantly with Gesler while remaining utterly devoted to him.

Book 7: Reaper's Gale

Stormy serves through the Lether campaign with the Bonehunters, fighting in the invasion that topples the Edur-Letherii empire.

Book 9: Dust of Dreams

The K'Chain Che'Malle Matron Gunth Mach selects Stormy as Shield Anvil — the one who bears the emotional and spiritual burden of the race. Stormy resists the role with characteristic belligerence but ultimately accepts it, forming an unexpected bond with the ancient reptilian beings. The role requires him to absorb the grief and pain of the K'Chain Che'Malle, a burden that transforms his gruff exterior into something more profound.

Book 10: The Crippled God

As Shield Anvil, Stormy rides into the Battle of Kolanse alongside Gesler. Together they lead the K'Chain Che'Malle charge against the Forkrul Assail at the Spire. Both die in the assault, sacrificing themselves to enable the liberation of the Crippled God. Their shared death is the culmination of a lifelong partnership.
